Health and The Fun Theory

This cool and classic experiment comes courtesy of Volkswagen’s “Fun Theory” site, which is dedicated to the idea that fun may be the easiest way to change people’s behavior for the better.
The idea is simple – make the task of climbing stairs into a game and increase the number of people choosing the stairs over the escalator by two-thirds. You can imagine that how it would perform against a dingy, slightly menacing staircase such as the one below.
Ok, so not every staircase can be outfitted like this. But what if parking garage designers made a pact to put the elevators off in a corner (while still being accessible for folks who really need them), and make the stairs if not musical, then at least well-lit? And maybe piped in some of that “Rocky” theme music?
Let’s get creative… what if we could play Wii Fit while waiting for appointments? Or enticed people to drink from a Bellagio-style drinking fountain instead of the soda machine? Or put fun-house mirrors that make you look less fit in front of the dessert tray, and the ones that make you look trim by the salad bar? Because if you have to do it anyway, you may as well have fun – and boost your health – while doing it.
See you in the conga line at the Department of Motor Vehicles!
